Wild about Wimbledon...but why?

I'm not a tennis person. I don't play tennis, don't follow tennis, and can probably name only a handful of modern tennis stars. Yet, for some reason, I find the coverge of Wimbledon every summer simply irresistible.

Truth is, I'm a golfer. Well, not really. I used to be a golfer, back in the days when I had five hours to spare for a round of golf. You know, like in 1980. But I'm familiar enough with golf to know it's one of the most boring games in the world to watch on TV. Not tennis. Tennis is exciting. But exciting enough to captivate me for a whole week? I watch it at work, for crying out loud. I have the official Wimbledon Web site on my bookmarks toolbar!

Maybe it's the setting I love. As a self-proclaimed anglophile, I am enthralled with all things British. "The Office" (BBC version). "Extras" on HBO. Monty Python. The Queen. Princess Di. William and Harry (especially Harry, who is clearly the more desirable catch). Men in kilts...game, set, match, baby!

Whatever the attraction, I'm hooked. But I have noticed something is missing from the proceedings this year: players behaving badly. C'mon people, give us a good, old-fashioned John McEnroe hissy fit to cap off the holiday weekend! Give those British tongues something to wag about!

In the meantime, fingers crossed for a Williams family final. Who will you root for, Venus or Serena?

Obviously, I'm a golf fan (and remember you can play nine holes in two hours) but I love Wimbledon as well. A Venus-Serna match would be great and I couldn't pick a favorite. I'd probalyb go for the lower seed since I love the "Underdog".

I am a tennis girl. Not because I play, but my dad and two brothers did and my husband teaches it. So, needless to say, we have the tennis channel and religiously watch every major tournament and most of the regular ones.

I, personally, hope it's not an all Williams final. I find them not so exciting when they play each other. As if they don't play their best and most competitive game, because it's their sister they're playing. And they are close sisters.

Whoever is in the final, Wimbledon is a fun part of summer. Hope to be there in person some day.
