U.S. swimmer Michael Phelps excites me. Not in a tawdry cougar-ish way (because, let's face it, I'm old enough to be his mother and that's just gross) but in that rah-rah, 'let's all get behind the latest American hero' spirit that comes over me with every Olympics.
Sure to be one of the most talked-about athletes competing in Beijing next month, Phelps is being compared to Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods and (be still my heart) 1972 swimming champion, Mark Spitz.
I couldn't help but notice young Mr. Phelps sporting a rather sketchy Fu Manchu at a recent press conference. Could it be he's trying to emulate Spitz in and out of the water? Well, if I really was Michael's momma, I'd tell him to lose the facial hair. It's not a good look, Mikey. And, besides, that extra drag might slow you down on the turns.
