We live in Seattle, and in the short space of a couple of weeks, we're once again headed back to the Midwest. This often excites me, because the Midwest has sun when we don't, but the Pacific Northwest is currently enjoying a perfect fall, and it's slated to be sunny and in the seventies while we're gone. On the other hand, a check of the Illinois weather shows thunderstorms and the temperature dropping into the fifties at night.
But here's what we can get in the Midwest that we can't get here:
~ Pork tenderloins, flattened, breaded, and fried.
~ Maid-Rites, aka "loose meat".
~ Strong highballs. Say "highball" in a Seattle bar, and they'll go "Hunh?" Say "highball" in Quincy, Illinois and prepare for your toes to permanently curl.
~ Catfish with white bread, butter, and slaw.
We can also do the Family Grave Visit there - something that's impossible out here - and we'll sit on the deck at my cousin's camp. It's on the Mississippi River, and even though it's up on 20-foot stilts, had 6 inches muddy water in it during the big flood.
We fly out early tomorrow. See you in about 20 pounds!
